The Stories Behind the Finds

Welcome to the first of a new weekly series from Local Global Finds.

If you’ve been following Local Global Finds, you already know that I love beautiful things. But for me, it has never been just about the beautiful thing.

It’s about the story behind it.

Where was it made?
Who made it?
What materials and techniques were used?
What culture or tradition does it come from?
And what makes this particular piece special?

I believe that when we know a little more about what we’re buying, we can appreciate it in a whole new way.

So, each week, I’ll be taking you behind the product — sharing the history, craftsmanship, traditions, materials, and stories that make some of my favorite Local Global Finds worth discovering.

Some weeks we'll talk about a textile. Other weeks it might be jewelry, a handmade home treasure, an artisan technique, or a material with a fascinating history.

Think of it as a little product education, a little storytelling, and a whole lot of discovery.

Because when you bring something handmade into your home or wardrobe, you're not simply bringing home a thing.

You're bringing home a story.

And I can't wait to share some of those stories with you.

Let's Start With Kanga

Walk through an East African market and you’ll likely spot them right away — brilliantly colored rectangles of cotton, alive with bold patterns and sometimes a few carefully chosen words in Swahili.

This is the kanga, also spelled khanga — a beautiful and meaningful textile that has been part of everyday life and cultural expression along the East African coast for more than 150 years.

At Local Global Finds, textiles like the kanga are exactly the kind of finds I love to discover. They are beautiful, useful, deeply rooted in culture — and they have a story to tell.

What Is Kanga Cloth?

Kanga is a rectangular printed cotton textile, traditionally used in many different ways. It can be worn as a wrap skirt, draped over the shoulders, tied as a headwrap, used to carry a baby, or brought into the home as a decorative textile.

One of the things that makes a traditional kanga so recognizable is its distinctive design:

Pindo — the decorative border
Mji — the central field or design
Jina — a Swahili saying, proverb, or phrase

And that jina is where things get especially interesting.

The words printed on a kanga can express wisdom, humor, affection, encouragement, religious belief, social commentary — or even a message that the wearer would rather communicate without saying it out loud.

In other words, the kanga can speak for you.

A Little History

Kanga emerged along the Swahili Coast of East Africa, particularly around Zanzibar and the coastal regions of present-day Kenya and Tanzania, during the 19th century.

Its story is connected to the textile trade of the Indian Ocean world. Early kangas were influenced by printed cotton textiles circulating through the region, and over time they developed into the distinctive textile we know today — with bold designs, decorative borders, and Swahili sayings.

Today, kanga continues to evolve, with new colors, patterns and messages appearing alongside traditional designs.

How Is Kanga Worn?

This is one of the things I love most about kanga — one piece, so many possibilities.

As a wrap skirt
Tie it around the waist for an easy, colorful layer.

As a shoulder drape
Wear it over a dress or simple top as a lightweight shawl.

As a headwrap
Fold and tie it for style, sun protection or tradition.

As a baby carrier
Kangas have long been used to carry babies and young children.

Around the home
Use one as a table covering, wall hanging, throw, or even beautiful gift wrap.

And today, kangas continue to inspire contemporary fashion and textile design around the world.

Why Kanga Matters

A kanga can be beautiful without saying a word — but when it does speak, its message can be just as important as its pattern.

Kangas have traditionally been exchanged as gifts for important moments in life, including celebrations, weddings and births. Their sayings and designs can communicate feelings, values and intentions.

There is something very special about that.

A textile that tells a story.
A pattern that carries meaning.
A piece of cloth that becomes part of someone's life.
